I believe you can join certain divisions of the Italian military if you are a non-citizen. Doing so will:
1)Automatically Grant you Italian Citizenship.
2)Will not invalidate your American Citizenship (as long as the country whose military you are joining is not at war against the US).
For example, a number of naturalized US Citizens of Jewish decent go back to Israel become dual citizens and serve within the Israeli Defense Forces without penalty to their US Citizenship.
A US Supreme Court Ruling in the 1960s stated that the only way an American can lose his or her citizenship is if he or she formally renounces it.

Can't say for Italy, but in the US, non citizens can join with certain stipulations.
(1) Entered the United States on a permanent residence visa or has an Alien Registration Receipt Card (INS Form 1-551/I-551 greencard or stamped I-94), and
(2) Established a bona fide residence, and
(3) Established a home of record in the United States.
Italy probably has something similar. Since they are in the UN and a US ally, there shouldn't be a problem with the treason thing, but that would definitely be something to look into before he joined a different military.

It's possible to join many other countries military. For example the French Foriegn legion I believe still don't allow French nationals to join. As for Italy you may find the Alpini or certain divisions of the army may take non-Italien nationals. Look on their website, all armies tend to recruit heavily and they will no doubt answer your questions promtly. If not, join the Swiss Guard, they guard the Pope in Rome.

I would imagine it is possible but that would mean giving up your American citizenship and becoming Italians.
