Actually, Ms. Dental Hygienist, "rubber dams" are almost always made out of latex.

I'm wondering if you thought that condoms were made out of rubber as well, since they are often called "rubbers".

A dam is not absorbant.
It is made of rubber, and it is used to isolate your tooth. Sometimes used when a filling is being placed. Helps keep that particular tooth dry, and keeps whatever they're using out of your mouth.

My hygienist asked for suction. When I attempted to oblige her she started screaming.
As far as the dam goes, they did that to me, now I am generating enough electricity to light my house. Of course you have to ring a bell ala Pavlov to get the juice flowing.

Are you sure she wasn't asking if you wanted that dam removed? Being Canadian, I know that an overabundance of beavers can definately create one too many dams in one's mouth.

Just how many beavers make frequent stopovers in your mouth Einstein?
