I quit cold turkey 2 1/2 years ago. I was a pack and a half a day for 10 years. My inspiration to quit came from my children. Quitting was one of the hardest things I ever did and cold turkey doesn't work for everyone. They have patches and gum to help with the nicotine cravings, but a lot of people are addicted to the routine (example, with your morning coffee, after you eat, etc....) The best thing to do is keep your mind busy with something else during the times you would normally smoke, like go for a jog, read a book, take up gardening, etc. I found that I was even addicted to the hand-to-mouth gesture and began to substitute my cig with food. That's why a lot of peope who quit gain weight. There are ways to avoid this like holding a pencil or straw to your mouth like a cigarette. Sounds silly, I know, but it will help psychologically. I believe you can even purchase "fake" cigarettes if using a pencil or straw seems too ridiculous.
Will power is also extremely important. You have to quit because you want to and not because you are being forced or coerced to quit. Most people who try to quit when they are doing it for someone else, end up relapsing. The fact that you WANT to quit is a great sign that you can, but it will be a long hard road. 2 1/2 years later, I still fight the urge to take it back up. And those that say they don't think about it at all are flat out not telling the truth! I wish you all the success in the world!

wow....slow down on the smoking.....okay here is my advice. I used to smoke as well...i did well for three months and now and again I pick one up and smoke even though I shouldn't but here is the advice... get a cessation councellor, talk with him or her almost daily until you overpower the urges, patches are the next thing to do. You will have the 21mg for three weeks, the 14 mg patch and then the 7mg patch. I am on my last week of 7mg and it is soooo hard to quit. It is definately MIND over matter...sorry to say. You need to keep yourself busy and your mind especially. Maybe hypnosis is a good idea too...I know pills can help. I hope my advice helps some at least. Take care....

Abhi, thats a very attractive ides. Reducing to 5.
But its not practical (possible, but not practical).
The best bet is to QUIT for once and for all.
Its tough, but if you find it worth it - then you should go for it.
1) Try Nicotine Lozenges for a first few days --> They are addictive too; but will help you break the quit into parts.
2) Patch: Excellent, non addictive, FULL QUIT STRENGTH needed on Day 1
3) www.quitnet.com --> some useful people there; like the ones here on Y! A
4) NO EVEN A BUTT IS THE RULE.

Set a date 4 months in the future and say you are not going to smoke until then. By the time's up, you'll probably be okay without them. It worked for me. Cutting down to 5 a day is no good, it's hard to maintain, and you'll inhale more deeply. Nicotine patches may help in the first week or two. Good luck, it's the right move.

Here is what i am currently doing.
I just recently had to quit because of my allergies and a bit of seasonal athsma. I cant laugh right now because ill cough hard and i cant inhale cigarrete smoke at ALL. Mind you im used to a pack a day. To take care of the nicotine cravings i use smokeless tobacco.
My preffered type is Skoal Bandits in the Wintergreen. The patch is wayyy to expensive for me and hasnt worked. This has in the past for me, I just started up again after 6 months cause i was stupid.
If you have never tried smokeless tobacco (chew) its some NASTY SH!T at first. Dont buy any that you have to pinch to put in your mouth as it will leave a very unpleasant feeling in your mouth and throat, buy the pouches. I use the Bandits because they are smaller pouches and people cant really see that you are using them.
DONT USE THEM LIKE YOU DO YOUR CIGARRETS! use them only for a major NIC fit and start reducing your intake. This will help you forget that you smoke. Eventually just keep reducing and reducing more and more everyday how much you take in.
Two weeks ago i was buying just about 1-2 packs a day, now im down to one little container of bandits that lasts me 3 days. pretty soon ill just quit alltogether. I dont even feel like i need a cigarrete anymore and i can go to the bars and not want one even when people are smoking next to me. but i do get a nic fit from time to time like after i eat, which is usually when i smoked.
Oh yes and dont forget, DISPOSE OF ANYTHING IN YOUR HOUSE THAT REMINDS YOU OF SMOKING!!!!! cigs, butts, ashtrays you name it. if you see it and it reminds you of having a cigarrete TOSS IT! you dont want anything at home to remind you of it.

I say pray before anything. That is a hard thing to do . You can psyche yourself out mentally by looking at pictues of what you're doing to yourself and your lungs. Also, when you have the urge to light up just put it off a few more minutes each time. You'll learn that you can do more than you gave yourself credit for. If you're on menthols get off those suckers. Also, go down to a lighter cigarette. Hope this helps.good luck.

there are a lot of things like chewing gum ,and special filters that reduces the nicotine level progressively ,and patches, and tablets, and your doctor really can help you
but ONLY YOU CAN HELP YOUR SELF
i have been there
i could not reduce it gradually ,because every time i went back to the beginning ,one day because i was stressed ,an other day because i was angry at work ,and every time i fined an other trick to continue smoking
i was like a drug addict
until i stopped one day at all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!from 30 cigarettes a day strait to 0 cigarettes
for about 2 month i was anxious ,i had sleeping problems ,i was dreaming that i am smoking in my dreams ,but than one day ,i forgot the need of smoking and thanks god i am not smoking for 10 years now
you just MUST TO WANT STOP SMOKING
YOU CAN DO IT,
if i did it you can do it too
but talk to your doctor too before you do anything
