Oh NO! Another New York transplant??! I thought NYC was the center of the universe?
Well since you're moving to the west, remember that the LA metropolitan area is spread out. The downtown area is trying to generate more residence but for the most part, you need to decide if you want to live close to the beach.
If you are a beach person, there's the South Bay, starting at the Manhattan Beach area, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach to the Torrance area. The closer to the beach the more expensive, and expect an apartment to start at $1100 a month.
If your job is inland, say near the Hollywood area or the Valley, you can move to Burbank, Brentwood, etc.
If your job is in the Orange County area, or more south, then there's the beach community like Huntington Beach, or way south like Aliso Viejo to Laguna. There's also Irvine, Costa Mesa which are nice areas.
In between the LA and the Orange County area is Long Beach. There's part of Long Beach which are nice but most are seedy. Again, if you want to live by the water like Naples, you get the nicer community.
Your best bet is to see which city you want to live in, and then ask the locals here in Yahoo! if that city is where you want to be. Just use the rule of thumb.. the nicer the area, the more you'll pay.

Manhattan Beach, Marina Del Rey, Hermosa, Playa Del Rey, Playa Vista, El Segundo - anything close to Loyola Marymount University with the exception of Westchester. A massive little gated "city" was just built under the school's bluff and still has apartments and little condos to be filled in.
You'd be close enough to the city, super close to the beach, but far away from the smog and plastic surgeons to inhale semi clean air.
Good Luck!

LA is so spread out - nothing like NYC. The beaches are wonderful if you can afford it - Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach. Not a bad commute to downtown LA from there. I also like the Studio City area. Stay as far west as you can afford as the smog is awful north and east of LA.

I'm partial to Pasadena because I lived there for 10 years. It is one of the few "walking" suburbs of the Los Angeles area. It has great restaurants, Old Town has some decent nightlife, a lot of single, intelligent women at CalTech and JPL, great hiking and biking, always something to do at the Arroyo and of course, the Rose Parade. It is freeway close to the beaches and mountains, has safe neighborhoods and decent rents.
