I homeschool my kids and would just like to know what a first grader should know by the end of the school year?

Check with your local school district. They are required to have a curriculum guide for each grade and are also required by law to share it with you.

Here is a great site by a 1st grade teacher at a public school. There are some great resources on this site. This first flyer lists what her 1st graders learn during the course of a year. There are many ways to decide what to teach when...but this is at least free:

This link is for the same site/different page and it is a assessment form...you would use other pages on this site to help assess the child's abilities. On this form, you can mark how the child did in Sept., Nov., Jan., March, and May. So you see the progress.

How did I find this? I just typed in:

What a 1st grade needs to know

In my browser. (I did not type "grader" because when I did that, only a million and one ads for the book by that name popped up.)

Two good resources are, "What Your 1st Grader Needs to Know" by E. D. Hirsch (he has a whole series of these from Kinder. through 6th grade) and, "Home Learning Year-by-Year" by Rebecca Rupp. Look for them at your library.

Another option is standardized testing, although I'm not sure I'd start this young (maybe wait until 2nd or 3rd grade). The ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills) and the SAT (Stanford Acheivement Test, not the college one) are two that are frequently used. You can order these from Bob Jones Univ. Testing service (see web address in sources). Both tests have specific requirements for the tester (you), but the website will explain what those are.

There are standard tests that are usually taken to make sure the children are able to pass to the next grade. Try asking the local school about it. :)
