Carbon sequestration is the term describing processes that remove carbon from the atmosphere. A variety of means of artificially capturing and storing carbon, as well as of enhancing natural sequestration processes, are being explored. This is intended to support the mitigation of global warming.

It's basically the idea that when the oil is sucked out of a hole, CO2 is pumped down to replace it, then the hole is sealed, thereby buying some time until alternate technologies can take over.

It is suited to, say, the North Sea, where very few rigs have drilled, and less so in Texas, which is so full of holes that if you pump it down one, it'll come right back up another.
