The southern states wanted to keep the balance of slave vs. free states so as to prevent any laws being passed by the Congress outlawing slavery. The Southern States relied on a slave economy as most of their economy was labor intensive farming. It was cheaper to buy slaves and give them subsistance living to get the crops tended to than it was to pay a living wage. What was not counted on was the labor saving inventions which happened shortly before and after the Civil War. Ellie Witney's Cotton Gin was one such invention. So, as with most things in life, it mostly boiled down to economics.

That wasn't the point of the argument. The point was whether or not the national government could regulate the states that closely. It was an argument over states' rights. The number of states free/slave was not at issue. The point that they didn't want Washington dictating whether or not they could keep slaves was the issue.

The northern states were more industrialized. The southernstates were more agricultural. The southern red necks needed the slaves because the slaves new how to operate basic machinery like (the Wheel). Since there are more cotton fields, farm land, bigger houses and people tend to have bigger families in the south, I would say they wanted to keep slaves to help tend to the land and help take care of the children. That's my take on it......lol
