Because political correctness thing has grown into a monster that is going to eat us up. People think they have a basic right for everything to be their way. If they don't like something they sue or protest. They haven't got a meaningful life so they try to make everyone else as miserable as they are.

Because Christianity in the government is freaking us out! People are dying while our president is on his knees! A bill to support sexual discrimination just went before the senate! It's nativity scenes and saying the pledge in school that makes children think this stuff is okay, then they grow up and vote for it. We need to clean religion out of the government. I don't care if someone puts up a nativity scene.

if it's paid for by the government, then it constitutes an "establishment of religion," which violates the first amendment. the government is not supposed to show support or endorsement of any specific religion. i know, sometimes it seems a little extreme, but it is very important that people of all creeds (and no creeds) feel comfortable. to put up a nativity scene on the lawn of a city hall sends the message that christianity is the only legitimate religion, which, at least according to the US constitution, it is not.

i hope i've been clear enough.

I gather you're very young. This would account, partially, for the use of "recently." For example, it was not a contemporary atheist who called for a "wall between religion and government:" Those were the words of Thomas Jefferson.

As for the writers who question the intelligence of atheists, I would suggest they not pursue what will inevitably be an embarrassing revelation.

The US has become more educated and diversified.

Using public property and tax dollars to promote any religion is an unconstitutional use of public property and money.

Why do religious fundamentalists so actively oppose the US Constitution and the rule of law?

its just the crazy ones, heh.
i'm all for nativy scenes, christmas colors, menorahs, easter bunnies, and all the rest of that jazz. i think kids need something to decorate their fridges with.
but i also don't like christians who tell me there should be prayer in school, or the 10 commandments in public buildings.
little things for kids and around the holidays is ok, but when you try to make some sort of statement that will alienate us, then its not right.

They aren't real atheists they were probably taught this by corporate culture making it policy to not have religious symbols at work.
This recent hate based stuff doesn't come from real atheists.

Because if they made a big deal about it a few hundred years ago, they would have been burned at the stake.

Incidently -- most protestants would have been burned as heretics for their beliefs as well.
