if i werent afraid of heights, yes. when technicians work on high power lines, they basically do the same thing. ask any lineman, the theory works.

I wouldn't, but the birds don't understand that 34.5 kv is going through the line.
However, some people DO make the decision to 'sit' on such a line. Some high tension power lines that can't be shut down are serviced by technicians working from a hovering helicopter. An over-simplification would say that, just like the bird, they are safe because they aren't grounded, thus the circuit isn't completed.

Birds and people are injured or killed by electrons (current) passing through their bodies and causing damage. The flow of electricity within a wire is analogous to the flow of water in a pipe. Voltage is equivalent to water pressure and no one has been injured by high water pressure if it stays inside the pipe. A high pressure water leak can hurt you. In like maner, high voltage can not hurt you if it stays within the wire. Sitting on the 34.5 kv wire is like sitting on a high pressure pipe. If while on the wire you touch the high tension voltage tower, electrons will flow through you to ground and electrocute you. While sitting on the wire without touching anything else, electrons find it easier to flow through the metal path of the wire than through you.

Actually your question is wrong. Birds dont get electrocuted because they are sitting on just that wire. They are not completing the circuit. If they were to touch another wire then they will get killed, yeah touching ground will also kill them because of circuit but how many wires are so low.

If the mechanics of the wire can hold me up, I would definitely be able to sit on it without being electrocuted. The wire has no potential to itself, just to ground and to the other phases.

I have no doubt on that electrical theory. I just worry that I may fall down.

No, I wouldn't, but mostly because I would be worried that it wouldn't hold me up.
