Basicly I want a rifle that is accurate and that will beable to mount a scope on it. Big enough to hunt with. Also a gun that i can find cheap ammo for. any suggestions would be great.

I know this might sound wierd but my friend keeps telling me to get an ak47. I would not mind. but can i mount a scope and is it a big enough round to hunt with?

I go with a bolt action; Remington 700, Savage's model 16, or the model 10/110 also from Savage. All rifles from Savage come from the factory ready for optic sights(scopes) and have the bbl floated(from the factory. Floated bbl's are more acurate. Don't look at price when looking for ammo. You get what you pay for. Premium ammo costs more but it shoots and performs better. Save the cheap stuff for practice. When it comes to caliber, here are my picks: .270 Winchester Short Magnum(my round of choice that I have killed 2 Caribou and a Dall Sheep in Alaska with; very fast, very accurate to well over 500 meters{I've done 1MOA goups at 800m durring practice a couple of times, it's hard to find a civillian range that has the ability and space to let you shoot past 200m.... big brother and I just went out into the AZ desert somewhere and shot}, enough *** to kill all game but Kodiak bear and probibly moose), .30-06 Springfield(old but old for a reason... IT WORKS!), .308 Winchester(7.62x51, the round of choice for precision Haji hunting and US med. machine guns), .300 Winchester Magnum(hits hard, shoots straight, requires getting used to the recoil, will kill anything, excellent round overall), .270 Winchester(another good all around cartiridge, it's kinda a small .30-06, been around for a while and that means ammo is readily available), and any variant of 7mm(accurate and powerful, but I don't have much experience with it. I just know some guys that love it). Don't go for any 7.62x39. That round loses alot of ***/accuracy after 300 meters. Train yourself to be surgical at 500 and you will be golden come hunting season. It's the Indian not the arrow my friend.

You can add a scope to certain AK type rifles that will accept a scope mount, but I wouldn't even bother. Most AKs aren't accurate enough to warrant the addition of a scope. The 7.62x39 round is adequate for deer hunting, but there aren't very many different loads and bullet varieties available for it. Most of the ammo out there is 123 grain FMJ. If you want a good deer rifle, I would suggest a bolt action in .243, .270, or .308 caliber. 30-30 and 30-06 are also excellent choices.

SKS would be ok, it's pretty hard to mount a scope on either an AK or SKS however, it's much easier for a new shooter to buy a bolt action rifle like the remington model 700 and mount a scope on it. The new Stevens model 200 is also very cheap, you should get it in .308 or 30-06

An ak probably would damage the meat, and I think the vibration might damage a scope if you could mount one and don't believe it would make if very accurate. AK essentially is more of a mower than a hunting device.
Personally I have found the thirty ot six to be very versitile, however I am not sure on ammo prices as I got a large quantity at a flea market. Good luck.

Look for a rifle in the .308 Winchester round, powerful enough to hunt with and not to expensive to shoot.

I would NOT advise you to get an Ak type rifle or an SKS to hunt with however the SKS would be easier to mount a scope on than the AK series rifles.

the ammo for the ak/sks is cheap and plentiful, but it's fmj. if you want soft points, they're going to run the same as regular centerfire ammo ($10 for a box of 20). an ak/sks isn't very accurate. i would suggest you buy one of those combo guns from walmart, like the rem 700 or the savage 110. it's the gun and the scope as a package. buy a .308 caliber. there is alot of surplus military ammo for it, soft/hollow point ammo is also cheap and plentiful (i bought 250 rds of s.p. from cabelas's for about 70 bucks), the bolt action will be more accurate than the ak/sks, and it's more powerful.

I do believe you can mount a scope on the ak type rifle, and the 7.62mmx39 ammo is powerful enough for medium game, and the ammo is cheap.

.30-30 is always a good choice or a .30-06.

You can hunt with a .308 round but I don't know much about the AK-47.

If you want info on the AK-47 go to my 360 website look at my friends and click on bluejackel, he should be able to help

yes you can mount a scope on any ak,aks,etc.. they cost around 250-400 bucks. your looking maybe 3-4 bucks a box or $120 a case for 7.62x39. if ak's anit your thing. look at the sks. there 100-300 bucks. same type ammo and a great deer gun and you can put a scope on it as well. those guns you can get a ton of goodies for.

the best gun by far that is cheap on ammo and a gun that will not kill the pocket book would be the .30-30, there are many brands out there new and used.
go to different gun shops and compare.
