Good question. The fire blanks. There are seven shooters who each fire three rounds or volleys. That makes up your 21 gun salute.
If it is for a funeral, three of the spent brass are then folded into the last fold of the flag before it is given to the deceased family member. The family members are usually never told it is in there, but it is placed as a remembrance of their sacrifice.

Nope, they're just blanks. Imagine, if they used real bullets, there would be flying bullets that would land on houses, people, cars, etc.
Not a good thing, huh?

No because even though bullets go very high in the air they still have to come down some were.

They do not use real rounds. If you watch, they charge the rifle after every shot. If they used live rounds then they would not do that. It would cycle automatically. I have done Honor Guard and have never heard of using live rounds.

guns salutes were originally fired with live rounds, although, after one VIP was killed accidentally by a salute, that custom kinda died out.

yes they are and guess what what goes up must come down. they do use them in funerals also. NOt every time and i am not sure when they do and don't but i have known them to use real ones.
