Why is prom so important?

I don't think it's that important. It's just an event to socialize with others and to have a little break from schooling. One of the possible reasons why people think that way is the conformity to the way the society thinks.

This 'you go have sexual intercourse' mentality is definitely not one of the criteria to have a great experience for a prom.

It's important because... Well, it used to be important because there were so freaking few formal dances around, but now that kids can just do that crappy jiggy dance instead of have to at least do a half-assed slowstep... Well, in that case you're absolutely right! It isn't anything more special than some crappy disco any more... What a serious loss for our culture! The complete death of real social dance... Everyone should go in black as a sign of mourning the loss because now that I live in the even crappier world of adults I see even less happening in social dance... unless you're like 70 or something, which I am not. I blame the boomers for murdering romance.

Who said u have to have sex after the prom.? the prom is the last time the class will do anything together. i missed my prom because i went to war . i miss a lot of the people i would have graduated with if i had stayed for my senior yr.

Ummm.... I dont know where you are from but where I am from prom doesnt mean you have to have intercourse.
