According to the CIA's web site,
Protestant 52%
Roman Catholic 24%
Mormon 2%
Jewish 1%
Muslim 1%
other 10%
none 10%
(2002 est.)
That actually makes Catholic the largest religion, since there are so many Protestant religions and they are so different from one another.
I suspect that many people with no religion categorize themselves as a religion, because they were born into it.
I've included a link -- if you are interested in religions in the world. About one third of the world consider themselves Christians (the largest group). About half of them are Catholic. About 1 in six people in the world are nonreligious.

Most see themselves as Christians, but it really depends where in America you are.
If you're down in the south in what they call the "Bible Belt", the large concentration of churches makes it easy for Christians to remain strong. It's mostly protestant churches.
If you're somewhere else like the Northwest, which many call the "Non-zone", most people write in the census that they don't belong to an religion. They are most likely agnostics or atheists.
Other places, like Utah, are mostly Mormons. The state of Utah was actually started by mormons, lol.
California is mostly Catholic, but I don't know that for sure.

I would say atheist, but that's not a religion, so most people are Christians.
