Think of a crown/cap like a football helmet for your head. It holds the tooth together from the outside (vs a filling which bonds from the inside). Crowns are usually a Standard of Care (along with a Post) if a tooth has a RCT (root canal therapy) in it. Crowns are also used if over 50% of the tooth is filling and the filling/tooth is failing.
Many of us find ourselves with teeth that are no longer structurally sound. Root canals, lost fillings, decay below a filling, chipping and cracking of the enamel are things that may lead to large scale defects in a tooth's surface. When the entire surface of the tooth is a problem, but the root system is intact, a cap might be appropriate for you.

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" that is placed over a tooth – covering the tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, and/or to improve its appearance.
The crowns, when cemented into place, fully encase the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.

There is a difference between a veneer and a crown, if that's what you're asking. With a veneer, they drill away much less tooth, and cover it with a thinner cap. With a crown, they drill the tooth down to a peg, and basically an artificial tooth is put over it.

Capped covers the whole tooth and the crown is coverage of only the top half of the tooth.

As far as I know, a tooth that is capped is the same as a tooth that is crowned. I believe the terms are used interchangeably.
