I want a sleeping bag good for thru-hiking the Appallachian Trail in the summer. What would be a good temp rating? 20 degrees? 30 degrees? Thanks!

Lots of hikers start off with a 20 to 30 degree bag (depending on how cold you sleep) until the weather really warms up then they have someone mail them a light weight 45 degree bag. That way they didn't have to carry the extra weight. I've met a couple of hikers who just sleep in all their clothes when its warm and don't carry a bag at all but they were very experienced and were willing to hike all night to stay warm if it got to cold and sleep in the sun the next day. I don't personally recommend than unless your nuts too.

It can get nippy up there in the hills. I'd like to suggest a 30 degree bag with a liner and an outer cover. They will each add another ten degrees to the range the bag is good for, but you can use the bag without them when it is warmer. In especially mild weather, the liner and outer cover can be used together as a very lightweight bag, without the regular bag. This will give you more flexibility. And don't forget a set of longies to sleep in, with a turtleneck, to keep the cold drafts out. A good mattress or pad under you will do wonders to help you sleep well. And a ground cloth to keep everything drier and cleaner. It also helps to keep bugs from crawling up to you. Good luck, stay safe and have lots of fun!
