Hey, whatever floats your boat. If that's your thang, then go for it!
...However, others also want to expand their interests to include yet others that they can touch with their best intentions in heart, mind and soul...
So to each his or her own. True??
Peace be with you!

My personal beliefs are not for my own good, I would like to take credit for them, but if it were just me, i would kill most people I meet on a daily basis. But that is not what I was taught, nor is it what I believe in my heart God wants from me. When I treat people well it is to share my love for God. There is no personal motive for it, I do not like people but because of the relationship I have with God, I think it is necessary for me to treat all people as equal and loving whether religion, sex, orientation, culture, race... Everyone is a creation (whether you believe in God or not, everyone was created in some way) and because of that, I will not treat it the way I want and hate them all, I will honor that creator (what ever you believe it to be) and I will hold those values for that creation!

Speak for yourselves!
If I was thinking of my own best interests, I would have been a lawyer, not working in a social welfare gig. I work long, tiring hours, the job is *thankless*, I get paid squat. I am ready to rip my hair out or strangle some kid or both! You think I do this for my own good?
The whole self-interest argument is flawed, anyway. Some people do regularly work against their own self-interest, and to do this does not always "feel good." In fact, it is down-right difficult. We do not always get benefits, not even "good feelings."

We are all ego-centric (self centered) and do nothing that does not either please us, or further our own selfish interests.
People who claim to be concerned for others do not actually care about others, they only care about making themselves feel good by pretending to care about others.
Additional comment:
Many people are masochists and to them, pain is pleasure. Even those who appear to be "sacrificing" on behalf of others are no different than anyone else. Their "sacrifice" makes them feel good or they wouldn't be doing it.

Ultimately, I do some things more for the interest of God than myself.

I agree... we only believe what makes sense to us, what feels best to us etc.
