It's a honda civic. The people that stole it used it for a joy ride and some heavy racing. The lower front fender is scraped so it looks like they went over some speed bumps at full speed. What steps should I take? For example should I go to a mechanic and have him look it over and then have him fix it and bill the insurance company, or will the insurance company check it over themselves? Thanks!

Contact your insurance company and see their procedure. Most likely they will have a specific location for you to take the car and have it inspected and fixed. (This will most likely be a body shop) If you suspect that there is engine or other mechanical damage caused during the theft - let your insurance company know so that it can go to an affiliated auto repair facility after the body shop. Also get used to this procedure because Honda Civics are the most stolen cars nationwide, you are lucky to have recovered yours.

Follow-up:

Most stolen cars 2004
NICB (National Insurance Crime Bureau)

1. 1995 Honda Civic
2. 1989 Toyota Camry*
3. 1991 Honda Accord
4. 1994 Dodge Caravan
5. 1994 Chevrolet Full Size C/K 1500 pick-up
6. 1997 Ford F150 pickup
7. 2003 Dodge Ram pick-up
8. 1990 Acura Integra
9. 1988 Toyota pick-up*
10. 1991 Nissan Sentra

Here is CCC's Information SVC
list of the 25 most-stolen vehicles in 2004:
1. 1999 Acura Integra
2. 2002 BMW M Roadster
3. 1998 Acura Integra
4. 1991 GMC V2500
5. 2002 Audi S4
6. 1996 Acura Integra
7. 1995 Acura Integra
8. 2004 Mercury Marauder
9. 1997 Acura Integra
10. 1992 Mercedes-Benz 600

The NICB calculates the total number of cars stolen while the CCC figures is based on percentage. (1 in 200 for the Integras) Notice that all the cars on the CCC list are relatively low in total annual sales compared to Civics/Camrys/Accords etc. Because there are much more civics than integras, there are more civics stolen every year. Can we both be right and agree that he should contact his insurance company right away?

Actually Integras are the most stolen cars. Civics are amazingly low on the list. I have a civic so I would know.
Talk to your insurance company before proceeding with anything futhur. Good Luck!

I would call the insurance Company. I think it should be cover, because it was stolen, But I don't think Insurance cover's Racing. So your best bet it to call the company.
