As a writer I travel there much- The city is like any other city- good parts - bad parts. Don't hire a car in the city. If you are going to the country a car is a must. Check w/ hertz or Avis. You will drive long distance to each pueblo. I recommend a small economy car. If you want a nice car- then rent a rag top mustang. The boricuas are correct- sometimes the kids like to play "chicken" with you on the freeway. If you want to rent a Escolade They are available Check in the Condado section of San Juan - kinda like 8Th st in Miami. Correct Boriquas? This is the most beautiful state in America! Don't let others discourage you!

Good luck with that, Im from Puerto Rico myself and my advice is if you dont want to get robbed you will probably want to rent a cheap regular car, Old San Juan is nice and friendly to tourist but you go a little further and you will end up in the slums, the crime rate is very high (759 murders in 05) and thats a lot for a little island that is only 100 miles long by 35 miles wide, about the traffic laws dont let no ignorant people fool you there are laws and the police is very strict and currupt also the streets are very little so is hard to drive a luxury car like a Cadillac or a Mercedes Benz, the island is beautiful and a vacation in Puerto Rico is very fun and unforgetable but you alway want to be aware of your surroundings, hope my advice is helpful, have fun.

Most all previous answers are correct to a degree. I would advice taxi, AMA (Government bus line) or tren-subterraneo (underground train) if in the San Juan Metropolitan area; a car rental if outside city limits. However, when renting make sure you buy plenty insurance. Puerto Rico is a very (underscore very) high crime place... Candidly, Puerto Rico is not a safe place.... I was born and raised there... Born in Barranquitas...raised in Orocovis. Sorry but the truth needs to be told. This thing about "Isla del encanto" is a bunch of hooey. Sorry!

I suggest not renting a car in puerto rico take the cabs. Remember there are not vehicle laws like here. You can drive however you nwant there and most likely the car will be totalled by the time you are to drop it back off. DO NOT RENT A CAR WHATSOEVER!!!!!

why do you want an luxury car. I'm from pr. If you are from pr you must know pr has limousine and luxury car services. They rent Lotus Elise, Hummers, Chrysler 300C, BMW Sedans and Limos. That stuff is good for special activities. But if you're a turist hire a cab. People here drive like maniacs. My dad's BMW has been crashed liked 3 times and my mom's Chrysler like 5.

With a car like that, you become a target for other crimes. You'll also have some problems negotiating the back roads as they can be somewhat narrow. Consider hiring a driver (nicer hotels will usually have one available) or a taxi to get to and from places. It will be safer in and out of the car. : )

I totally disagree with 2341. Puerto Rico has traffic laws like US. Remember PR is part of US territories.

You would have to call the car rentals directly to find out sometimes they have a couple of convertibles or luxury cars, but none of them you will find online.

See if they have a private car service with things like limousines, not Hertz or Avis, sometimes called things like livery service.
