Given that you know what you want (i.e. Cab, merlot, Zin, etc.) what is the determining factor for you? Price? Maker? Pretty label? Region? If you were going to buy an unknown wine (to you), what would it take to get you to pick the unknown over a safe bet you always buy?

Start with the kind of wine I want.
Then I set a price point.
Then I go for region (I'm partial to Italian wines)
Then I go for maker or a pretty label (they're tied)

I usually get a feeling for wine when I buy it unless it's recommened or I've had it before. Maker and Region are what matter to me the most. Price isn't an issue because you can get $2 Chuck and it's descent.

The food it will be paired with. Nowadays you can pair more than white with fish and red with beef. Ask your wine shop if they have a sommelier for suggestions.

Taste, I generally like the sweeter wines, I don't like the tart wines at all.
