There was an urban legend that floated around that said cellphones had caused fires and explosions at gas (petrol) stations. There are no stories of this actually happening. Furthermore, there have been a number of test conducted to try to cause a fire or explosion from a cellphone and no test has been able to cause one. they don't want you to use your cell phone, because nobody uses the pay-phones anymore. So they just made up that the petrol station is going to explode or something, so that the phonecompany can make some money.

I have to assume you are referring to cell phone use at the pumps. There is a danger of static electricity that if sparks could result in an explosion!

It's a cell phone they are concerned about. They are concerned about the possibility of a static discharge igniting the gasoline???

that's a myth. fires are started from static electricity caused from getting back in your car, then getting out again without discharging yourself by touching something metal.
cell phones cannot ignite gas fumes.

Explosions, static electricity, when you get out of your vehicle you should always touch the hood or door to disengage the static.
