Best places I have looked for that is free. Rootsweb, you may find someone who has already started your surnames. Latter Day Saints, scroll down to Family History, and start your search. A good resource book called "The Family Tree Resource Book for Genealogists", has all states and counties, all their web sites are free and you go directly to the county you want to search. If you have a local library that has a genealogy department, they may have a subcription to Ancestry, ours does it't free with my library card. That is the best site, but is costs to use.

If someone else has posted say a grandmother, it might already be there. If you're starting from Scratch, you can get a 10 day trial i think from ancestry.com, but truly i'd save that for later when you've had more experience. If you're looking for relatively cheap info, try your local Family History Center. They have microfilms useful for death records and the like.
