I've read the answers that are being provided to you. I must tell you that in the state of California that "tapping your breaks" is illegal. You can not do this as it might cause the person behind you to hit their brakes hard causing them to have an accident.

First off, pull over to the next lane, number two or three. The lanes are numbered left to right where the number 1 lane is the farthest left lane to number 2 which is the next lane to the right of number 1 , etc.

Second , call the 911 number and tell them the car (license number and description of the car) and the location where the problem is occuring,

Do Not play the game of "tapping the breaks" as you might cause the accident and in California, you are responsible of the accident regardless of the individual tailing you.

I used to install a pushbutton on my cars, in the console, that would turn on the brake lights without actually hitting the brakes. Scares them with no risk.

Another fun thing to do with tailgaters, if you are on a multiple lane road, is to trap them for a while behind you and another slow-moving car in the other lane. Ease forward and back for a while and watch him change lanes trying to get past the two of you. After a few miles, let him past. He'll take off like a bat out of hell, and for the next few miles you can speed with impunity, because he'll be out in front unwittingly beating the bushes for cops.

I used to tap my brakes until it was pointed out that it's pretty dangerous; if they're unconscious enough to be tailgating, they won't have fast enough reactions to respond to the lights/slowing down, and could hit you.

I turn on my emergency flashers. It gets their attention. Then if they don't respond, I *gradually* slow down, or if possible change lanes.

It's better to just let them have the road. It's not a contest.

Tap lightly on the breaks & they should get the picture. If they continue to do so, then slam on the breaks. They certainly get the picture then. Of course, some people get extremely unhappy when you do that, so...be careful who you do that to. I had a woman chase me down the road for 5 miles because I forced her to run off the road instead of plaowing into the back of me. :-)

Connect a switch down to your brake light switch. It's not hard to do and splice into the wires.

This way you can flip the switch and turn on your brake lights without actually stepping on the brake pedal.

It's cool because you can flip the switch and they will back off immediately without you having to actually step on the brake, and you can even accelerate away and laugh at them in your rear view mirror!

You cannot prevent this type of rude, dangerous behavior. the safest way to avoid tailgating is to put on your blinker, and turn or pull off to the side and let them pass. you don;t want to glare or anything either, you don;t want them to stop and give you a hard time.

Remember, if someone does follow you, just drive to a police station. They will stop following you as soon as they figure it out...

Turn on your rear fog lights, and accelarate at the same time.
This confuses the tailgater as they think you have a problem with your brake lights, and they back off.
Works better with cars with no high level brake light.

As hard as it may be for people to do this, I know it is for me, but if the person is really tailgating and you dont want to deal with it or a fenderbender then let him pass. HERES MY REASON THOUGH: he's now the next person's problem so don't have to deal with it and neither does you car (aka: accidents)

Tap your brakes.

Of course, if you're in the left lane doing 5 under, move your *** over and they'll stop tailgating you.
