If so, how often do you drink a bottle of it? If you don't, what price point would it take for you to pick one off the shelf over a merlot or some other popular red? What would you expect a $6 pinot from CA to be like?

Pinot Noir is actually considered one of the most complex varietals by wine experts. I enjoy it frequently, but have the luxury of living relatively close to some of the best producers in the world in Oregon. I would certainly drink a $35 bottle of Pinot Noir over a $35 bottle of Merlot. Depending on what I'm eating, I would consider it equally with a $35 bottle of Cab or Sangio.

For $6 CA Pinot, expect a thready, light colored, possibly slight fruity or bitter wine. It may be labeled Pinot Noir, but it won't be what wine people consider good Pinot Noir. The better bottles start at around $25-$35 dollars and the best bottles can regularly reach upwards of $150. Argyle and Erath make some decent ones starting at around $20. They aren't the greatest, but are a good entry level model to get you on the right track.

Typically the best in the area are:

Domaine Drouhin (especially their Laurene)
Domain Serene
Archery Summit
Patricia Green

Some people swear by Anne Amie, but I haven't tasted one worth their price yet. And although I haven't had it, I'm going to guess that Medici Pinot Noirs (start at around $20) are quite good as they come from a fabulous wine maker.

Salut!

I love Pinot Noir. I'm a red wine drinker. It all depends. I get a feeling about the wine I buy unless it's been suggested or I've had it before. Kind of like when Bugs Bunny bounced around when he found gold with Yosemite Sam. I tend to keep Merlot, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Sauvignon on hand to drink and cook with. I've found some pretty descent bottles for less than $6 at Trader Joe's. Expect it to be good especially if it's from Napa or Sonoma.

I have to say I'm more of a Grigio fan from Pinot grapes but of the reds, I find Noir a little less tannic. You have to be careful with a red for $6, it can be overly tannic and not preserved with enough sulfites. I like the Georges Doebuef (sp?) wines for reds. However, I agree with the above person about Trader Joe's wines.

I am not a wine expert, I just like a bold heavy wine. I have had Pinot Noir (I think) and as I remember I liked it. $6.00 for ANYTHING in CA is cheap so I wouldnt expect much

Yes
Fairly often
And not much from a $6 bottle, you'll probably need to trade up to at least the $10 bottle for it to be worth a pooh!
