Measure the area you want to build i.e length X Width if a rectangle now multiply that by around £1200 to £1500 per square metre of extra floor space, the further south you live the further up the pricing scale you are likely to be. I am currently trying to get a single storey L shaped extension on my side and rear and the quotes I have had for that vary from £27322+vat all included to £45000 just for the shell to be erected so make sure you get a few quotes and ALWAYS inspect their previous worksmanship and go back after the builder has left you to try and speak to the owner in case they are trying to pull a fast one. Don't forget aswell other fees are incurred such as architects, surveyors(if Party Wall Act 1996 comes into play), planning fees and solicitors(you may need to get your deeds changed.

The question is not just strength, but code compliance. While an 8" wall is strong enough, it if were designed for a second floor it might be set up different. Codes very some, and your local code is the issue. The advice to have an engineer (or an architect or skilled licensed builder) advise you is good advice. If you get a builder to quote the work, he will be responsible for the code compliance and proper structural design if hired.

I would estimate between $55 and $75 per square foot depending on how fancy you get.

That is what contractors are for, you ask several of them for a quote then add the sum off all the quotes and divide by the number of quotes. there is your answer.

Where do you live?
How many square feet do you want to add?
What amenities do you want to put in?
Brick, stucco, log, or vinyl siding?

If you edit your question to include more details, then I can answer your question better.
