One interesting thing I have learned about the word "sacrifice" is that it's root comes from "sacer" = "to make powerful". I think that as we sacrifice to God it builds our committment to Him (which in turn makes us more powerful)

A sacrifice to God is something you give that cost you something. That something could be anything. The ultimate sacrifice is when someone gives their lives in sacrifice to the Lord. I have not come to that level when i can give anything, right now i think i can give basically any of my material thing to God, but what happens if it was my life, my family? Its not easy but i often pray for the grace to give this too to the Lord if it comes to that.

The only sacrifice you can make is worship. After all, your free will is the only thing you own. Everything else is your "reasonable service". Strip away everything and you've lost nothing, worship alone, in any condition, state or plight can be refused or given. Nothing you've ever done or surrendered has any value at all to God; it's just the filthy rags of your own righteousness. Don't think you've done any sacrifice, because when you do, you've wrongfully lifted yourself up.

Good story.
Sacrifice is giving something that you don't have to give, for another. Giving my rent money to the single lady down the street because she has no money to feed her kids, using my time to volunteer even though I have better things to do. But ultimately, sacrifice would be laying my life down to save another.
Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice. And so many people ignore it, it means nothing to them, even though he did it for them just as he did it for you and I. Kinda sad now that you think of it, huh?

Psa 51:17 The sacrifices of God [are] a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

i didn't read it but for me sacrifice is giving up something i love soooo much, that i don't know if i'll live without it... in the end it works out to give it up because if you do it for God... man, it'll be worth it in the end...
