Venice Beach is very unique too. That beach is world famous with the rollerbladers and the body builders.
I also agree that Santa Monica has the pier and things to do as well.
If you go further south, in Orange County there's Laguna Beach where there's an artist colony. Lots of shops and restaurants, not to mention a lot of hot guys... but many are gay. Eye candy is about all we girls get.
Huntington Beach has the shops and also in the summer there's beach volleyball tournaments, where players from all over the world go to play. Lots of shops and restaurants too

You should really think about going to Huntington Beach, CA and Laguna Beach is really nice w/ crystal blue water unlike LA beaches. You can get sick if you swim in the Los Angeles Beaches, so I wouldn't do it if I were you.
Huntington Beach has a lot of action, great places to shop, eat, relax, sunbathe and swim..you can't go wrong and it is the " SurfCity, USA " capitol landmark. I grew up there and it's truly amazing. Huntington Beach and Laguna are both in Orange County

I like manhatten beach for the sand and waves but maybe the muscle beach is what you are looking for. always lot of tourists and shops and action.

laguna beach, malibu. Santa monica's beach is very dirty, there are some nice stores there but it is dirty. the pier is fun, for couples, but that is the only reason to go to the pier.
