Its dangerous to medicate your own animal, take him to the vet. There is pain medication there and they will try to see whats causing the problem. I hope you can do it today, and animal shouldn't have to suffer. An over dose of Tylenol can be fatal, don't give him any.

Very very rarely an astute intelligent dog may catch on that it gets a fuss and attention when it has limp and when the limp is better, the fuss gets less, so it may hold its paw up in the hope of a fuss etc. But dogs that do this are few and far between. They do not cry out in pain though. Its sounds like your dog does really have something wrong with his leg or paw and if he is crying a lot then that is NOT faking it. Dogs do not cry for no reason. Get him to a vet and explain the problem. It may just be a thorn in his paw, a loose and bruised nail, or it may be a more serious bone problem. He may need an x-ray. Only a vet can help the dog.

It really depends on what kind of pain your dog is in. You can give aspirin to dogs - it is just as safe for dogs as it is for people. Yes it can cause gastric ulcers but that is true for people as well. Tylenol however is not a medication to give dogs. They do not have the enzymes required to process this drug very well. Your veterinarian is the best source for finding the right medication for your dog - there are many options available.

Be smart when you chose to use glucosamines - many OTC forms of this supplement have been tested by 3rd parties and have been found to have little and sometimes no amounts of the supplements on the label. The brand Cosequin is the only one tested and proven to be affective (they have a patented form of the glucosamine/condroitin).

Please call your vet for dosing of ANY medication you wish to give.

Another option to look into if you are dealing with joint pain is acupuncture. This in non invasive and can be very effective!

I agree with the last poster... If your pet is in pain take him to the vet. Even though dog aspirin is available at pet supply stores i would not give it to your pet without first finding out from the vet the reason for his/her pain. If you ever have a non pain related pet issue the site below has vets on staff that answer your questions online.

You should take him to the vet, but if this is not an option, you can give him some medicine.
If he is a "big dog" as you said, you can give him an ibuprofen. Open his mouth, put it in the back of his throat, close his mouth, and hold it close while he swallows so he cannot spit it out.
I have labs, and when they get old, they tend to have joint pain, and my vet recommended giving ibuprofen, because it is the same type of medicine they would give.

Yes, there are several available at your vet's. Glucosamine often helps joint pain. You can get it at your pet supply.
What type of pain does your dog have?
Aspirin can be given, but only occasionally, and only children's aspirin, or buffered aspirin. Never give a whole aspirin, but only 1/2 for medium or large dog, and 1/4 for a small dog, and never more than once per day for two or three days.

"seems to be in pain"? You should only give meds to a dog that IS in pain or sick. All meds have side effects. They may or may not affect your dog. I suggest that you go to a vet before medicating your dog.
There are some household meds that are safe fo dogs. See website :

I would not give him asprin. Either call or take him to the vet so that he can prescribe a pain killer for him.
