Yes not sratching one's self is a good way to avoid good conversations, but I'll help you in a more useful way. First, take up a subject that you (or the person you are conversing with) know little about. This allows you to begin a conversation with a small fact or kernel of wisdom that will grow. Next, prepare a phrase to use to end a converastion if it is going badly.

Join toastmasters. It will develop your ability. Join a book discussion group - many libraries have them. Join structured groups where everyone has a turn to talk [like student council or the chess club in school]

read a lot of books and magazines and watch educational TV and talk shows and news. Then learn to look people in the eye and listen to them and notice what they say and respond. Just say "yeah" or really? or hmm or anyhting to show you are listening. Nod your head a lot. say "far out' or "i'll be darned" They will think you are a genius. avoid arguing. the more you listen the more you learn.

Communication isn't just talking it's listening and besides, being quiet is part of who you are. I'm sure people will love it that you listen to them, and then you'll become more friendly and you may feel more open to have a conversation.

Have something to say. Be aware of the reaction you are getting with your remarks. Play poker. Read the situation and most of all keep a sense of humor. If you smile at people it drives them crazy!

Talk to people, listen to their responses, watch their reactions when you speak. Remember that good conversations should be like a ballerina's skirt; it should be long enough to cover the subject, but short enough to keep things interesting.

Read the papers, understand what's happening in the world... that way you'll be able to participate. Read the culture section, read the entertainment section, sports, politics, business... you need to be able to offer something as well as listening.
