First and foremost question are you afraid of dogs? If yes, just try your best to avoid them. Animals including dogs and cats are very perceptive creatures and they can sense who is afraid of them and who isn't. When a animal senses your fear of them, they may growl, show their teeth, chase you or taunt you in ways to make you more fearful of them.
If you believe that a dog is going to attack you. Talk softly to him or her and go backwards away from them slowly. Don't raise your voice or keep eye contact. To an animal if you remain constant eye contact, that means you want to fight them. Avoid doing that. Never turn your back to animals that want to fight or attack. This is also a signal to them that you want to fight. If you have a small dog biscuit or something, give that to him or her, throw it in their direction and that may prevent you from getting attacked. Good luck and I hope you never have to face this situation.

If you think the dog is just posturing and being obnoxious, then yes, make yourself big, stare, and scream at it. In other words, this only works if the dog will be intimidated by you. However if a dog means business about biting, do NOT look it in the eye, not even for a split second. This will challenge the dog and trigger the attack. Keep your hands low. Turn your head to the side and look down, not up. Back away slowly.
Dogs that are barking at you may bite, but a dog that means serious business is often dead quiet.

I happen to be a future animal trainer, so i no allot about this topic. Anyway.. OK, Do NOT look the dog in the eyes! Don't listen to the others. Don't show any signs of fear, they can smell fear. Slowly back away from it, but don't run they'll chase and attack you. If u have a cell, call 4 help. If there is no where to go, crowch down on the floor. If the dog comes chargig, punch it in the chest or the nose. I wouldn't want to hurt it though, so I would just decide to be dog chow. Choose either u get hurt, or the dog, but since im an animal freak I choose to get hurt. Good Luck!

Ignore it. But sometimes that doesn't even help. I was attacked at the animal hospital I work at by a dog with a muzzle on. I just stood still while ppl were trying to pull him off of me. It was scary, but that dog has serious issues and nothing I could have done would have prevented it. If you are prepared for a possible dog attack, keep pepper spray on you and spray it in the dogs eyes. Then it can't see what you are doing.

you should aways be calm dogs can smell FEAR trust me i know get away quickly but DO NOT RUN dog will chase you and will attack and if you have a cell phone use it and call SELF CONTROL and do not look strait at the eye that is the worse thing you could do. but if it is a snow dog you got to bite the ear i know it is disgusting but it works if a dog is growling at you just act normal and walk away but if the dog attacks you beat it up .if you are a person that are to afraid and can't calm easy then wait there till the dog gets Bord but if you are bord and calm walk away. it is going to work .good luck

First stay calm, dogs can smell fear. Back away from the dog slowly. If there's someone nearby call out for help. Get away from the dog as quickly as possible but DON'T RUN or it will chase you and probably attack. If you have a cell phone handy call your local animal control office.

Stand very tall, make yourself as "big" as possible, speak loudly and in a deep voice, stare into the dogs eyes, and do not run.
You need to play a dominance/intimidation game. If you make yourself "bigger" and taller than the dog, and if you can make yourself appear threatening, they will be less likely to attack.
To make yourself "bigger" puff out your chest, broaden your shoulders, hold your arms slightly away from your body. "Bow up" as it is sometimes called.
Do not turn around. Back away slowly, keep staring into the dogs eyes. Say "NO" or "Back" loudly and firmly.
The point is to make the dog seriously consider whether or not it wants to try to attack you.

It depends on the size of the dog.
If you see a small to medium size dog, raise your arms and show him your teeth.
For bigger dogs, your best bet is rolling on the ground and covering your soft parts and face.
Whatever you do, do not run. Dogs are pretty good at chasing and very likely they will catch up with you.
The best way is for you not to be around vicious dogs, of course.

Imagine doing Macarena-type of dancing?
(just joking!)
Dogs can smell fear no doubt. But at the same time, no sweat and try to pretend you are yawning and close your mouth with your hand at the same time. Avoid eye contact. Dont show your teeth i.e smiling! Dogs will find teeth of symbol of attacking and strong. By yawning (in their own mind), you may be tired, less energetic, not harmful and you show them calm assertiveness! I dont know how to explain but pretending to yawn and ignore them slowly works for me to deal with aggresive dogs!

Do NOT look him straight in the eyes. That is the worst you can do!
I just give a very commanding, "No, Go Lay Down!'
They say, "what the hey?" appear a bit startled, and go away.
If you take command, they will back down.
