Before you decide on the destination, my recommendation would be to look at the Ryanair website http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/ and check out the prices for the bucket-priced tickets (sometimes as low as £1).

If there aren't any interesting destinations there, try EasyJet http://www.easyjet.com/en/book/index.asp which has more central destinations (i.e. they fly to capitals like Paris, Charles de Gaulle and not some small obscure airport outside Paris). I've bought tickets with EasyJet and they are reliable. If you buy them early, tickets from London (Luton) to Madrid could be as low as £30.

Now that the flight is sorted for next to nothing, you will have enough money to splurge on your cheap holiday! Again, you can book your hotel through EasyJet, but depending on where you're going, you may get cheap deals directly from the hotel.

Have a look at Ryanair's route map, and pick a destination in the east or south. Their new routes to Poland and the Baltics look tempting. They also have flights all over Italy, south of France, Spain, and Portugal, and if you click on a destination on their route map, you get some basic info about sights, hotels, and car hire.

What's wrong with the stuff on your doorstep? Scotland's nice when the weather's ok, then there's the Lake district in England. People never visit their own country these days...
