Getting her spayed is probably a good idea. Some females are very tempermental when they are unspayed. Please spay her and do not get a dog right now. Deal with the cat issue first.

Cats can be very jealous creatures and they are very perceptive too. It sounds like your cat thinks you pay more attention to the kids than you do her. Whether this is fact or not, the fact remains that that is what your cat thinks. Have you or the kids tried to play with her and interact with her? Some of her problems may be due to the fact she needs fixed. Plus her age factor too. Or perhaps she is unwell. Take her to the vet for a thorough check up and exam there may be something physically wrong with her. As for introducing a dog in the mix of all this is not advisable at this time. See what you can do to improve your cat and children situation first. Then once your problem is solved, then you can get a dog. But remember, not all dogs and cats get along together and I'd be very careful if I was you to watch out for any sudden anger outbursts from your cat and new dog. Good luck to you! Pets are God's gifts to us to enjoy their companionship that can last a lifetime.

your first action should be to get this female spayed asap. some cats are love muffins and some are not quite a muffiny. have your children leave her alone if she seens to be in a mood of not wanting to be touched. make sure your children do not tease or touch her when she does not want this attention as it will lead to scratches. please dont listen to the people who say get rid of the cat! cats have feeling too and are not throw away. ofcourse your children are important, but you took on the responsibility of a cat ande she deserves your loyalty too. i would not get a dog just because your children want one. you already have a situation that requires extra time with a tempermental cat and adding a dog to the family will exacerbate that. you can talk to your vet about a "calming" solution. some cats are put on meds for this condition. you can buy calming products at the pet store although some contain alcohol and a drunk cat waddling around is not something that you want. start with the spaying, that should
help with her temperment. i have some cats that i know do not want to be bothered even with some soft stoking and others that love a good cuddle at anytime. you might consider another cat, maybe a kitten. this will provide your cat, once the initial shock of another cat has worn off, to have a companion to snuggle and share washes with. remember we humans are not always in the best of moods and will yell and such in our misery.

Your cat sounds like mine. She probably would not react well to a dog since she has a problem with your kids already. When my son was little, our cat use to hiss and swat at him. It has taken almost 3 years for her to get use to him. It seemed to help that my son fed our cat - from a distance, then closer and closer. Now he can pet her. She is an older cat too. They just get territorial.

If the cat is mean to the kids, she is probably trying to tell you that they have abused her. DO NOT get a dog! The cat is having problems enough with the kids, she doesn't need a dog to chase her and bite her!

Kids grab and pick up cats. Cats do not like this. Find the cat a home with no children around.

I had the same problem with a male cat. I ended up giving him away. No way will I shelter an animal that isnt kid friendly, just the way I would not get an animal if the kids were too young to be gentle with it.
