She won't use a scratching post. Spraying water doesn't deter her. She's destroyed my roommate's couch. I could hit her but I don't want to resort to physical means. Help me before I'm evicted!

Um........ Don't ever abuse her. If water doesn't work then try water with ice in it!

Let me ask you this, did you buy her any scratching toys?

First thing first, you can purchase repellent spray. It's a spray that has some kind of smell and taste that your cat will dislike and eventually turn away from your furnitures.

Secondly, get the cat something to scratch with. I recommend TURBO scratcher or purhcase cat furnitures with ropes. With those, you also want to purchase what is called CATNIPS. You rub catnips onto the scratchers (on the rope for the cat furniture)and the cat goes crazy for it. It's a good way to ease their anixety.

Never hit the cat, you are much bigger than she is and she will learn to fear you.

Try a combination of the Soft Claws, spraying water when she's naughty, rubbing the scratching post with catnip, putting it next to where she likes to scratch, and you can also try rubbing your hands and/or your worn clothes on it to attract your cat to your scent.

I second the Soft Paws comment. I put Soft Paws on my cat, and they work great! No ouchy amputation surgery, and no ruined furniture. They're easy to apply and come in all kinds of cute colors. A pack of 40 is around $20, and will last you roughly a couple months.

if you don't want to declaw, try putting catnip on the scratching post and whenever you are around, basically hang the cat on the side of it. It will start to get the message that this is where you want it to scratch.

Put that scratching post right where she scratches the couch. If she just starts scratching that post, then she will not use the couch. The post will keep her claws in better condition.

i haven't been on a practice for an prolonged time now, yet i think if I ever do return and forth by the practice contained in the close to destiny, i could choose to study an exciting novel. Now that I think of it, it form of sounds like some thing i'm going to heavily watch for.

You can either get the cat declawed or there is the option of nail caps. They are easy to apply and are non-toxic if swallowed. They make a great training aid. One brand I would recommend is Soft Claws.

Declaw... or put double sided tape on the corners where she scratches (the heavy-duty carpet tape works well -- I think they even make special tape for this purpose ... check a pet supply store) ... she cant scratch what she sticks to... :)

Or, get a scratching post and put catnip in it... she will fall in love w/ her post :)
