That's because they are opposite expressions of the same emotion. THis means they both make you go through the same physical emotions, but affects you differently at the emotional state. You can love someone passionately one minute, and hate that same person with the same passion immediately after.

Love and hate are the flip sides of the same coin (emotion).
A person is more likely to be assaulted or murdered by someone who "loves" him than anyone else.
