I have a mother cat that gave birth to 4 kittens about a month ago and now she's starting to lead those kittens out of the house and to a school nearby during the night.I assume that she wants to teach them hunting or something but its too early and anything outdoor could endanger those kittens so I stop her whenever I have the chance but there are times when I missed, I had to search for them in the school and found them just wandering around.I feed the mother well and I really dont want to lose them in such way...I'd like to know the reason she's doing this and how do I control this behaviour?I've tried caging them but she mewed the whole night.Thanks...

We had same problem with our psycho polydactyl cat. She kept dragging her screaming kitties through the top window and down the bottom of garden to get to the fields. In their natural state a mother will move her kitties for security. We had to keep her in. When she wanted to go out we locked the kittens in one room and mum cat called and was unhappy. We did not let her in to her kittens again till she had calmed down. After a few days it worked. When they were older we let them out into garden with her and she was a great mum, only watched them as they explored then they'd trot in behind her. She was so proud!

She's going with her instinct. She is trying to teach her babies things they don't already know by natural instinct. If I were you, I would separate the family as long as the kittens are independent, meaning...not still feeding off momma. That way they will learn some things on their own and you won't have to worry about mom leading them off. Allow them time together in a controlled environment where you or someone else can keep an eye on them. Don't deny them time together epsecially if you plan on keeping all of them. But in order to protect their lives, you should take immediate action. Put the kittens up when you aren't around so they can't wander. Mom will be fine on her own, but keep those babies safe until they can grow up a little.

According to the World Book Encyclopedia, at about the age of three weeks, kittens begin to explore. The mother is probably just showing them the workd outside of your house. They should stop when they are a little bit older.

How is the mother getting out of the house?

I would not let the mother outside at all. Ever. Even when she doesn't have kittens. Too many things can happen to the mother AS WELL as the babies.

do you pick the kittens up a lot or let others handle them? if you do then mama may want to move them to a place she feels is not as dangerous. just like human moms don't want everyone messing with our babies neither does mama cat

well she probably needs to have all ways from going outside while your not watching them to be blocked because other wise one day she might get out and you not know it and she could get killed.
