big bones can mean just that they have the genetic makeup to have larger frames ex. wrists, fingers, ankles are larger because their bones are bigger. Unfortunately that description is often used to explain away fat people. Most big boned people today are not big boned ex. 5ft 2in tall women are rarely big boned, if they wear a size 10 or more they're just obese like 60% of the US population.

There are a couple of good answers here and the remaining you I just have to consider the mentality of the person and go on with life. Yes there are big boned women. How do I know? I'm one of them and I don't care how much weight you lose people will look at you and think "what a big woman". As far as BBW there are big beautiful women. Men and women that are into anorexic people could not understand that but some many are beautiful on the outside and many more are beautiful on the inside.Because of the mentality of people in this day and age we are going to produce a generation of younger children with the anorexia. We are no different than others, we don't like labels. I hated being called fat as a small child but now I prefer that to the "clinical" term "obease". Thick is a new one on me have no idea what someone looks like who is thick. So guys if you are trying to figure out what a girl looks like by a vocabulary term just jump in and take your chances because no matter what you call it its all in the eye of the beholder and what the person is trying to convey to you. The rest of you who are looking for someone who is skinney don't try to explain things you have no concept of. I am big boned and "somewhat overweight" (another vague term meaning I do not touch both sides of the door as I go through it) person that you can now call fat and it rolls off me like water. It ruined my life for many years but I've learned it's not me it's the person that is making that judgement that is the one to feel sorry for. I'm going home some day and will have a new body so why worry about this one. God doesn't make mistakes so there is a reason I'm "big boned" Have a blessed day.

Because "fat" is an ugly word with ugly connotations.
And some of those are keywords in personal ads. BBW is "Big Beautiful Woman" and it's a term of strength, not ugliness.
Believe it or not, a lot of people are outright attracted to "larger" people or even don't care what their companions look like.

Some don't want to say the dreaded F word.."Fat". Some, say it because they are optimists and view themselves as bigger, not fat. And some can recognize the definate meaning of the terms big-boned and thick, and use them in the proper manner. In my opinion, it's a way of being polite and not saying someone is fat.

Just because a person is big boned does not mean their fat . Im 5 foot 2 inches and weigh between 119 and 122 lbs and have bigger bones but i look small. a big boned person weighs more because their bone are heavier then a small boned person. It all depends on how much you weigh.

Because they do not want to be called fat. Fat is a harsh and insulting word and they do not want to be called this so they are trying to turn a negative into a positive. It's rude to call someone fat. Think about it would you rather be called "thick" or "fat"?

"Big boned" has to do with body frame and not with weight. I was big boned and obese, then I was big boned and over weight and now I am big boned and normal weight. Still going to be big boned. My wrist is almost 7 inches around. I do not look freakishly big. There isn't normally that much difference between a "big boned or Large frame" and a "Medium Frame". . Sizes do not accurately define the individual as "obese". Obesity has been more precisely defined by the National Institutes of Health (the NIH) as a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 and above. (A BMI of 30 is about 30 pounds overweight.) and even the BMI doesn't take into considerations things such as muscle mass and body frame. I was measured at a health facility (they did complete measurements so that is more accurate). There are also body frame calculators online that can give one a general idea of their frame type.
The term "Big Boned" has been misused by the ignorant masses for years unfortunately. Normally after consistent misuse of a word/phrase for a period of time, it seem the dictionaries now days will just include that misused definition. So at some point in time this term will also probably take on the meaning of "fat".

If i had to guess....it sounds a lot better than calling yourself fat. And some people really do just have larger frames - so they want to differentiate between themselves and those who are just 'big'.....but that's just a guess.

Some women do have larger frames, and it has nothing to do with being fat. Then again some women are proud of their size, and don't want to be skinny.
