How many times have you started a martial art and you've noticed the sensei is fat and out of shape?

It happens all too often. When martial artists reach the top of their game, they supplement martial arts with other forms of exercise, such as running and weights.

Ok, so joining a gym may be too boring for you, and running too lonely. Running is quite possibly the lonliest thing someone can do, but it'll give you time to gather thoughts.

Generally, kick boxing and karate type martial arts are better for fitness than grappling type ones. Aikido, Judo and Jujitsu are awesome, but you won't get fit. Boxing will get you fit, but its boring and you will get battered.

Your choice. But for fitness, you can't beat the gym.

If your after an all over workout then may I suggest Capoeira. It's the type of martial art that exercises all of the muscles in your body as well as improving your flexibility, Cardiovascular system and balance.

If you don't know what Capoeira is then it is a Brazilian Martial art that involves acrobatic movements, including kicks, dodges, sweeps, Cartwheels and many other moves between two people in a circle called a Roda (Pronounced Hoda).

There are generally two different types of Capoeira. The first is called Angola is generally played slowly, close and low to the ground and the other type is called Regional. Regional Capoeira is a lot more acrobatic and faster with flips and high kick. Some schools also train a combination of both and this is called Capoeira Contemporânea.

It is very hard to describe fully as there are so many aspects to it but if you search the web you will find loads more information on it.

Any martial art that employs sparring is great for fitness. If you're not interested in sparring kickboxing is still a good option. Many kickboxing gyms will allow you to work out on the bags and catch pads with a partner without having to ever step foot in a ring.

Also, someone mentioned that jiu jitsu and other grappling arts are not good for conditioning. That person has obviously never experienced what it feels like to wrestle with an opponent or set of opponents for an extended period of time. When people first try grappling they often find themselves winded within minutes. It takes a lot of work to develop the anaerobic-glycolosis energy system required for grappling. It's a completely different energy system than the aerobic system which is used in running. Many people who consider themselves in shape are surprised at how unprepared they are when they first try to roll.

Tae Kwon Do is great exercise especially if you go it 4-5 days per week. It strengthens you entire body because of all the jumping, kicking, and punching you have to do in each class. Long classes can really challenge your endurance.

Krav Maga has some vicious cardio as well..

I would do Tae Kwon Do. A lot of people do it for exercise, but you still learn a lot from it. While it does involve sparring, you are allowed to wear protective pads so you don't get hurt. Tae Kwon Do is one of the coolest looking styles out there because of its spins, and special kicks. It doesn't revolve around sheer body power like kung fu and judo. It works because you become unpredictable to your opponent.

Oh, and it also involves some basic weapons training. Pretty cool.

Tae Bo is one step away from aerobics, I can't understand why it is even considered a martial arts as there is no actual sparring. But its a good all over workout and great for losing weight.

Tai Chi is perfect for the older person. And, yes, it IS a martial art. Wouldn't want to meet a bad tempered master in a dark alley myself wether he was young or old :-)
