Any type of air conditioning unit must have a way to expel the hot air it generates outside of your home.

With a window air conditioning unit, the unit sits partially inside and partially outside. The hot air is expelled directly to the outside.

With a Split Air Conditioning one unit sits completely inside, and another sits outside. The hot air is channeled through a pipe to the outside unit. This means that the unit can be placed anywhere, not just in a window. Also, since the compressor is outside of the home, the unit is quieter than a traditional window air conditioner.

Yeah basically in a split unit, the hot side of the heat pump (condenser and compressor) are outside, and the evaporator is inside. (generally)

There are some "split unit" systems where the evap and condenser are outside, and water moves the heat from inside to the evaporator outside.

Wrong.

A split system uses refrigerant, not air or water, as the medium to carry "heat" out of the house.
