Linux isn't an operating system. It is a kernel. Various distributions of Linux package it in a way that laymen would understand as an operating system (i.e. a graphical desktop shell, USB device drivers, plug and play hardware detection, accessories, games, communication protocol support, and a web browser.)

To understand what comes with the Linux distributions, you can look them up on Google. The main distributions for home use would be:

Suse
Mandrake
Fedora Core
Xandros (the old Corel distro)
Lindows

...there are others.
