i would have to ask myself two questions.
why was my face so close to that area of his body,
and how the heck did i allow myself get into that situation?
reality,
nothing, there are many people that bodily functions like this are not only unintentional but something they honestly can not help.
for a good majority of them flatulence is a bane to their existence. who am i to say if the farter in front of me did release gass on purpose or because of a physical malfunction? if he had one leg would i take offense?
i would do nothing,
still i might ask my self why my face was in such a compromising position.

You reaction will depend on the circumstances surrounding the person's action.
If the farting is as a result of inability of the person in question to control his/her system perhaps due to an illness, not an intentional or provocative action, then the best option is to assist the person in the best possible way you can, be sure if it's a case of illness, the illness is not the transferable one, good luck.
In the instance of a provocative action, then the best action is to ignore him/she and leave the scene of the incident. This is more dignifying and keeps you out of trouble. Mind you if you engage him, you never know where that will lead you, people won't know the difference between a sane and an insane when both a involved in an arguement or a brawl.
