if you mean short movies as in filmmaking, then get a minidv. if you mean short movies as in recording family events, then dvd is probably better. minidv offers better quality than dvds but if you plan to watch without editing dvds are better cos you can just pop it in, while you need to edit for minidv. and why did you want models of sony? if you knew it was good then you shouldve gotten it. so what im trying to say here is that when buying camcorders dont look at brand alone, but what the camera actually has to offer. i prefer the pv-gs series by panasonic, but it doesnt necessarily mean that all its models are better. the higher models of the series offer 3ccds. if i were you, id get something like a pv-gs150(not so great) , 250 or 300, if its just for day to day use and your just beginning to make movies. if you already make movies, i recommend a pv-gs400 (which is what im getting in july, although they are hard to come by) or a 500, although it doesnt have headphone ports and the ring(4 way focus/zoom/aperture/shutter) like the 400, if you find those important(i do). i think www.camcorderinfo.com helps a lot.

Well if you are going to use this for anytype of movie making you need to look at the prosumer models. I would stay way from the DVD camcorders since they automatically compress your video and reduce the quality. Go look at a Canon GL2, or a Sony VSX1000. These are great cameras, they will give you full capability for doing movies and they are still small enough for home video use.
