Firstly, let me just say this to you sir: Try riding a motorbike.

People are becoming anti the police because the powers that be are making the police anti the people, allow me to ellaborate. When I was a student I did student things like drinking and singing loud. A police officer in the city where I live now has the power to, and they do, as the simplest way of dealing with such behaviour hand out an on the spot fine for anti social behaviour, although they can be challenged when you wake up to find one of these on your pillow next to your fuzzy head I doubt you would. This has two main effects 1 - It effectively makes an officer judge and jury, with leave to appeal (for want of a better way to term this) 2 - It turns the police into that most hated of all human beings, an overgrown tax collector.

Now look at some of the new powers that the police have in relation to youngsters- they can get a dispersal order for a particular area. Meaning that if you stop to tie a shoe lace and you are with a friend in the wrong area you can be picked up and taken home.

Next consider that most hated officer of all and most often the only one the likes of you and me will ever come into contact with: The traffic officer, think of the sheer contempt they treat people with and the (often) blatently sneaky manner in which they do their job.

Now throw in half a dozen media stories into the mix about people being 'framed' by the police and brutal attacks by officers and speak to some people who have had some involvement (in a legal manner) with the police, stir and bring to the boil.

Despite what I say above I know that the police do a lot more than they ever get credit for but from my own PERSONAL experiences of the police ( I have had 2 motorbikes stolen, 1 car, been held up at gun point in a shop I worked at as a student, and been mugged) in all but one of the above situations the police just wanted to get a crime number issued and get out as quickly as they could.

To sum up I think people are anti police because they have low interpersonal skills, not very good P.R. and because they are simply becoming glorified tax collectors.

They serve their purpose. But very few people are 100% law abiding. Congratulations.
The problem is many police are drop-outs that couldn't make it elsewhere in life and so get into law enforcement. Not the wording if you will: Law Enforcement. Many are nothing more that intellectually challenged thugs with the law behind them doing what they do best - giving other people grief by bullying. Not nice. Straying from 100% to 99% of the right side of the law is not always your fault and not always harmfull. Tell that to a bully with an IQ of 80 with the law behind him.

The problem with most of the Police force, is that none of them joined because Neurosurgery and Astrophysics weren't challenging them mentally. A good solid portion of them just like the idea of bossing people around and the power they are given y filling in a few forms and comleting a training course that most monkeys over the age of 3 could accomplish. This is not to say that they have an eay job, most of them became police officers to help people. But, these aren't the ones goig around harrassing young people when they 'look like they're up to no good'. It's the other ones who enjoy being legally able to lock people up for whatever retarded reason they can fish out of their law books, which are conviently misplaced when it comes to things such as 'Appropriate Use of Force to apprehend an 18 year old. It's the small percentage of Policemen and Policewomen for that matter that make most people apprehensive about the Police Force.

Because they are corrupt, lazy, racist, and inept.
They have no interest in solving crime, or even turning up when it's reported.
They treat the motorist as a money tree. If you report them for anything, a vendetta starts until they can exact revenge on you and the make it obvious. they are legalised thugs.
I describe the majority, there are some rare good cop's.
I am a law abiding citizen. but if you have never had a problem with them, you are the exception to the rule.
I hope that you continue to have no grief, Good luck!

I agree with lady_jmx. Plenty of people who are "decent law abiding citizens" get unfair treatment from the law, but often its not the police's fault. For example, Aboriginal people in australia are about 27 times more likely to serve time in prison than non-Aboriginals. Its not so much the police, but the law tends to disproportionately affect them. (If you want a source on that do a search for the Australian "Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody"). Sometimes the problem is racist police, but it doesnt have to be.

I've met plenty of cops and usually they're great people. But I object to the idea that just because you obey the law, the police wont hassle you. The law in general is much more likely to hassle you if you're not white even if you obey the law.

Many reasons, the most predominant one would be because we like hating authourity figures. And sometimes it's for good reason.

Like it or not, there are always those that join the force for the wrong reasons - (same for politics) - for the power. There are twice as many corrupt cops out there as there are corrupt politicians. I have enough friends in the force to know this to be true. Of course, they are in the vast minority, and on the whole, they have one of the hardest, (and thankless), jobs on the planet, but it's the minority that give the rest a bad name.
Plus, you're never going to see a newspaper headline that reads "Police do good job at demonstration".
We only hear about the bad stuff.

On the whole though, I would say most people have a healthy respect for the police. And even those who hate them would be thankful for a few flashing lights on a dark night.

Lucky you-in the UK the police are obsessed with prosecuting anyone speeding-I have no problem with this in a built up area, but doing 10 mph over the limit at 2 in the morning on an empty motorway? The flip side is, many, many Police commissioners have been caught on the speed cameras, however in their defence state they could not remember who was driving at the time. As a decent citizen, try using this as your defence, and you may well end up in jail. not to mention the officer 'testing' his new car doing over 130mph in the middle of a town centre.

I met a young lady (19-year-old college freshman) who thought all cops were "bad cops" because she claimed she was pulled over for speeding by a drunk cop. I think the main reason she didn't like them was she was doing a lot of drinking and partying (she's under age) and would get into little "scrapes" with them.

I respect cops--they put their lives on the line every time they do a routine traffic stop. I guess when you're a cop nothing is "routine." And I agree with you--if you're a law-abiding citizen you have nothing to worry about!

the difficulty with liberals is basically that they be responsive to lots that may no longer so. The Liberal ideology is a thought , fostered by ability of a delusional, illogical minority and which holds forth ideals that have not have been given any foundation in certainty. Criminals do no longer pay any interest to regulations... If weapons have been ever banned than basically the undesirable adult adult males might have them..Criminals desire unarmed victims!! Having a gun won't help each of the time yet being defenseless will in no way help.. while seconds remember calling 911 and asking the undesirable guy to attend isn't a attainable decision. extra perfect to have a gun and not like it than to like it and not have it!!! **Police do no longer defend you from crime, they typically basically look into the crime after it takes place.** @

the reason is: for many years it was ok for police to abuse people. example would be a drunk passed out on a park bench would be beaten for not moving, and charged with assulting a police officer because the police officer cut his hand on the drunks teeth when the officer punched him.
a more modern example are the Over Reactions of police agencies like the LAPD. as a result of the news covering LAPD it is assumed that all Cops are the same, so if the LAPD beat rodny king like that than all police will beat anybody else like that.
