I want to lose weight - about 20 pounds, but I am not classed as obese or anything. I am 5ft2 and weigh 138 pounds. Will the Atkins/Low-Carb diet work for me? Also, does anyone have any tips on getting started?

Cheers!

i personally would not recommend this diet. any diet that asks you to cut out any main food like carbs etc should nit be used. Just cut out bad starchy carbs like white bread, white rice etc and eat granery bread or rye bread, brown rice etc and have smaller portions.

Yes i did lose alot of weight in two weeks from Atkins but i also fell really ill with it, i had no energy, i constantly felt sick and cold, and i found i couldn't face eating anything after a while. The things Atkins get you to eat like cheese and eggs and meat every day are themselves in the long run not good for you. you are also not allowed to eat fruit for a while or certain veg which is maddness!!! I really would not reccomend doing it!

The Atkins diet is good for losing weight but the long term effect on the body is unproven. In particular it is thought that the high protein content may harm them kidneys and the high fat may harm the heart and arteries (although Dr Atkins was a medical doctor and claimed that cholesterol was lowered in the long term). I have tried the Atkins diet and did lose a lot of weight. I also felt much better - more alert and stopped feeling sleepy mid afternoon. I stopped when I reached my target weight and have slowly put most of it back on. After a few months I got tired of searching the supermarket shelves for something different to eat.
I think the best advice is to stick to a healthy balanced diet with plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit, don't overeat and take regular exercise.

Atkins is bloody dangerous and the only bad thing about him dying is that he did so before everybody cottoned on.

The human body should take the bulk or it's energy from carbohydrates (about two thirds of the diet). The remainder of the diet should be about 20% fat and 15% protien.

Regardless of whether you want to gain, maintain or lose body mass, these proportions remain. Anybody who tells you differently either doesn't know any better or is trying to sell you something.

With regular exercise and a sensible diet, you will be able to achieve a healthy body. If you try and crash diet, two things will happen. The first is that as soon as you go back to your old pattern of eating, you will go back to your old body. The second is that you will put a strain on your heart, other body organs, mess with your digestive systems, distrophy your muscle tissue, weaken your bones, deprive yourself of essential nutrients, lower your immune response and depress your endocrine system.

Everybody is looking for the quick fix, but I'm sorry; there isn't one. There is a simple rule of thermodynamics to be applied; if the energy consumed and the energy used do not balanc, there will be a change in body mass.

Go to your local gym or see a dietician (one with a masters degree, not a weekend course) and get some advice on your ideal calorie consumption and getting a sensible exercise programme started.

The Atkins diet has been discredited as being unhealthy, a friend of mine tried it, lost loads of weight but now weighs even more than before she started. The only way to lose weight heathily is to increase your activity levels and eat well, fruit, veg, lean meat and lots of water.

It really is an unhealthy diet. Fair play - it works, but at a cost to your heart and blood. Exercise - 30 minutes 4 times a week will shed those 20 lbs in no time at all.

It is mainly acid diet. It removes the water out your body, thus weakening your muscle. Attacks the cartilage and bone mass.

Drink water according to weight approx 1.5litres per day (mineral or very good filtered water)

Drink Vegetable juice (few organic carrots/green apples - lettuce (any), mint, cucumber).

Excercise everyday, get plenty of sunshine (1hr per day).

Eat vegeatable proteins such chick peas, kidney beans, lentils (but soak and drain the water before cooking them) - even better to sprout them.

Do this for 2 months - you will loose 30 pounds.

I can give even more tips

definitenly not.... atkins has been proved to cause ketosis and muscle wasting... welll.... if u want to lose your muscle and become as wrinkling as old granny then there u go...

scientifically, our main fuel source is glucose, so when u eliminate your carbs, your body need something to replace with and starts breaking down your protein .protein is the olny option to generate glucose, and protein is your muscle (and lots more of your body constitutents made of protein).

fat is unavailable, because it has no way to be converted to glucose, so that's why your body use protein instead
