he's making you feel unhappy about yourself and doesn't seem to care a great deal, there are many people who will treat you much better in the world.
How is that situation "easier" than having a happy life either single or with somebody who will treat you in a more loving and respectful manner?

If he didn't go away for days on end you would have to put up with this bad behaviour all the time! He clearly has very little respect for you or needs to know how to control himself better. I would have ended it as soon as the roughness started.
