My cat Dixie is gaining quite a bit of weight, if she can't cuddle with me or be attached to my hip, she eats. If she's bored, she eats, not that there is always food available. What can I do about this?

Yes, and the most common one is obesity.

It's serious because it can lead to diabetes and other health problems, and because it makes a cat more susceptible to hepatic lipidosis if they should become sick and stop eating for a few days, as cats often do when they don't feel well.

Cats get overweight for the same reasons people do: too much food, too little exercise, and too much of the wrong kinds of food. In cats, the wrong kind of food often means too many carbs. That's even more true for cats than people, since cats are obligate carnivores and can't digest carbs and other vegetable products in the usual way; all they can do is turn them into fat, then live off the fat as if they were starving. Cats that eat a lot of dry food are getting too many carbs regardless of what else they might be eating.

As for getting her more exercise, that's the fun part: play with her!

If you think there is some thing wrong with her take her to the vets but it sounds like she loves to be busy doing thing like most cats. Do you tell her out of the house as then they do, do lots of walking and playing. If she is a house cat then get her some toys that she can jusmp to reach and balls that make noises. You can also get balls you can put treats in to make her play and fight to get them out which will help her be more active. Hope you find some to make her happy and not so board. Good Luck

Sounds like your cat is bored. If you live in a city get her some toys and if you live farther out let her go outside.

You may want to get a reduced calorie kibble. Prescription Diet has that, but you have to get it prescribed by a vet.
