he misses you and needs your attention. Try leaving an article of your worn clothing with him when you leave.

Sounds like you dog has separation anxiety.

Start by giving the dog more attention and toys to play with while in it's crate.

Also do not make a deal about leaving or returning. Try to leave as calmly as you can without drawing attention to it. Do the same when you return. Eventually your dog will see that you are coming back and it won't be such an ordeal for both of you.

Consult with a dog trainer for other ideas and possible techniques you can use. An experienced trainer will have several different techniques for you to try.

If none of this works talk with your vet. There are prescription medications and natural remedies available to help your dog deal with your leaving.

We foster dogs and I have had several with separation anxiety. If you are patient and consistent with the methods that you choose to use then it is possible to stop this behavior.

Good Luck!

Our dog does the same thing, we work most of the day and the only time she has company from us is in the evening, it is an attention seeking method if you cant spend more time with her, get her a play mate, another dog, or a kitten at that age they are still young enough to become great playmates, and the dog wont want as much attention from you.

He may have separation anxiety. If he is not hurting himself or destroying anything then it is probably nothing to worry about. I know it must be difficult to hear him whine though.

There are some things you can do for separation anxiety that might help. Pay no attention to him for the last 30 minutes before you leave. Try not to give him any indication that you are leaving. For example I used to always say "see you later" so my dog learned that meant I was on the way out.

Puppies are a bit like young children: if their "master" goes and leaves them on their own, the puppy or child assumes it is being abandoned. Till it becomes accustomed to its master going away and coming back, it doesn't know that you're going to come back. Once it gets to realise you're not abandoning it, its behaviour should improve.
If every time it cries you give in to it and "reward" it by giving it attention, it will end up knowing that it can control you and thinking it's in charge of you, and its crying will only get worse.

Beagles attach themselves to one person more than another. He just needs to spend time with you. He is always going to have separation anxiety. It is in their nature. My sister has a beagle and she and her husband seem to "take turns" as to who the dog is attached to most that week. It is in their nature. He will adapt some, but never quite be ok with out you around.

My cat is the same way. She will meow with her little toy mouse in her mouth and carry it from room to room. She not used to being left alone. She use the toy mouse as her comforter. Give your dog something to pass the time away. A toy. or pay alot of attention to them before you leave.

ah, bless him! he certainly loves u to bits! I think its a sign of security, a sense of feeling loved and safe when your with him, and who knows-maybe ur dog gets worried about ur welfare if u go out without him? dogs are very clever and thats something alot of people dont c! if your upset, they give u a sense of love, if ur happy they are the same.... my dogs (a large, plump golden lab and mad springer spaniel!) jump up and watch out of the window till im out of sight....then they probably do the doggie thing and sleep till i get back in, but they are so pleased to c me....my lab picks up presents (usually a sock or kids toy¬!) and greets me when i come in and im always equally as pleased to c my dogs - only i draw the line at putting my kids socks in my mouth to give the dogs a present! try leaving the radio or tv on, an item of ur clothing on the bed...just so he knows u wont be far cos ur stuff is on or near him?!
I had a lovely dog about 10 years ago but she used to get separation anxiety, and jump from the bedroom window, put her teeth thru the window locks just to get out to find me, it was so sad-i had to rehome her as she was about a year old, she went to live with a handicapped person as they were home all day, and the carer would walk the dog- but i only done that as she was going to do herself some serious damage the older she got -with jumpin from windows etc...not such soft bones the older they get. i was heartbroken....
good luck xx

My dog does the same thing with my father. What we do is that when my father is going to leave we take the dog and we play with her and entertain her in the mean time my father sneaks out the house and she doesn't notice. lol

He sure misses you a lot. Try sending him to obedience school & see if that makes a difference. They may have good advice on common behaviour and how to handle them. Try searching the internet. I did a search on 'dog' and 'behaviour' and got a few good hits.
