The US Senate is composed of two senators for each state -- 2 * 50 = 100

The US House of Representatives has 435 voting members and 5 non-voting members (representing DC, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa) = 440

Together that adds up to 540 members of Congress .

Congress is the correct name to refer to both houses together, although sometimes the term is used, incorrectly, to refer to the House of Representatives. Also, we use the term "Congressman/woman so-and-so" to refer to a member of the House of Representatives, when we should correctly say "Representative so-and-so."

Read up on the Electoral College, the institution that actually elects our President.

Here's the breakdown on number of congressmen:

http://www.fairvote.org/e_college/popandvotes.htm

There are 538 Congressmen total in the House of Representatives. Plus 100 Senators. Total = 638.

I'm amazed that people don't seem to know the answer to this question.

There are 100 senators and 435 members of the House of Representatives.

The District of Columbia and the territories of American Samoa, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands are represented by one non-voting delegate each. A non-voting "Resident Commissioner" from Puerto Rico represents that island.
