Cover the gate so he can't see them and train him not to!

Dogs have hunting and herding instincts that make them want to chase anything that moves. Some breeds are worse than
others - Border collies, for example. The best way to correct them is to practice 15 minutes a day, twice a day for several weeks. Have some friends repeatedly drive past in their own cars or ride by on bikes - slowly at first and then faster and faster. You can correct the dog with a long leash (20 to 50 feet) each time he lunges after the cars. Or you can have your friends stop their cars and toss dozens of empty soda cans on the road near the dog to show him it's a bad idea. Also, teach him to sit-and-stay, then praise him for NOT chasing the cars that go past.

Slapping him on the nose is a waste of time - by the time you get to him to slap him, the car is long gone and he doesn't even know what you're mad about. You have to interrupt the behavior before it actually starts - when he is first THINKING about it!

Slapping him on the nose will only make him wary of you. You need first to take the dog to obedience classes. They will teach you how to train your dog. Is your dog outside unsupervised? If so the problem will be harder to solve.Stay out there with him and when he does this behavior tell him firmly he is being a bad dog. Firm, not loud. When we yell at a dog they look at it as we are barking to. Oh joy, now we can bark together. When you see a car coming put the dog in a down, stay. If the dog stays (that's where the obedience training comes in) you praise the dog a lot and give him a small treat. If the dog breaks (and he probably will at first) tell him firmly "bad dog". You just keep working with him till he gets it. The most important part of dog training is the trainers constant persistence. You have to be diligent for your dog to learn.

You could try a little shock collar or even a Shock Barking collar.
The Bark one will give them a little shock every time she barks at anything. Otherwise, the shock collar has a little remote that you can do little shocks only when you want her to receive them. It's not really any more painful to them then a good smack on the nose or butt. It's a very popular training aid. Once they seem to be doing better, you can take to collar off or simply leave it on but not push the button.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/xPkIr

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

This problem i realy not that difficult to correct. First put him on a leash, everytime he does this just give the leash a yank, ( not too hard just enough to get his attention ) at the same time give a firm "NO" do this a couple time and he will get the picture. Please no slapping, this makes him timid, nobody wants a timid dog, give him a kiss instead......

consistency is everything....
that's the first rule in puppy trianing!!

second, don't yell and scream at him...he will just think you are barking at the car too and that it's o.k.

when he starts to bark at the cars, make a noise that lets him know it's a "no" thing.
our dog trainer taught us to say "ehhh" or "ahhh" it's like a short clipped "ehhh". means don't do that. it's not like "ehhh" what did you say??? it's not like "ahhh" i just remembered something. it's an "ehh" or "ahhh" noise that is somewhat high pitched to get his attention and it's clipped, so you aren't going on and on about commands, etc and confusing him.

this "ehh" sound should be your "no" for anything! if he jumps on the couch, then push him off while saying "ehhh" (like don't do that) and then redirect his attention.
same thing with the cars.
give him the noise, then try to redirect him back into the yard with toys, a game of fetch or chase. the more you "ehh" him and redirect him he will forget about the passing cars!
it's all about the consistency, though!! it will be hard at first, but in time you will notice a difference and it will get better!

the noise is kind of like saying "at" with dropping the "t" and just saying the "AAAA" but there's a bit of infelction with it.

my puppy responds very well to this noise. anytime i "AAA" him, he stops and looks at me, Like "what'd i do?". then i redirect him and he forgets about what he was going to do!

take care and good luck.

also, petsmart has some great training programs for dogs and puppies. we started one of their puppy programs and it is helping alot!!

All the responses you got are great. Never slap or hit your dog.
Remember they are "people" too. Teach with love....:):)
