Compulsive Lying.

This person, not unlike the gambler, or the alcoholic, has little or no control over the lies he or she tells. To the compulsive liar, lies come out of the mouth as easily as truths, usually with little or no forethought to why or what the consequences will be.

It's difficult, because generally it is difficult to treat a problem unless the person knows they have it and accepts it. The general consensus on the Internet is that it can be treated by therapy. But I can see that it's difficult for you to approach the subject with your daughter because she doesn't accept that she has a problem.

Perhaps you could talk to a doctor or a professional about this, to see if they can persuade her to get help. She may be lying because she is worried you will be disappointed in her but then it became a habit and she can't get out of it. Denial is a strong thing however, so she probably deep deep down knows she has a problem but can't accept it. Good luck, sorry, I don't entirely know how to help you, but I hope you sort it out.

i used to be the same. i told little fibs to make myself more interesting or popular. they were normally about my self. you know great things i claimed to have achieved in the past. the problem was some people know me from back then and some some don't and obviously if they meet then i can get caught out on that lie. i dint want to be classed as a liar and as my web of lies built up the chance of that happening also increased. i found the only way round this was to admit i had lied about some things. each time a old lie was mentioned by my friends i would hold my hands up and admit i had fibbed. it still happens now but my friends have more respect for me and my honesty. i still come out with the odd lie but as soon as i say it and they are going "ooh really" i admit it was a fib keep the damage to a limit. try it yourself. i think your friends will respect you more for it and it shows maturity which cant be bad

I know people like you. I have come to the conclusion that people lie because they are trying to impress people, but the problem is lies always get discovered and the liar looks really stupid. It doesn't matter if you have not got alot to say at times, why not try asking people about themselves and it will soon start off loads of different conversations. Ask people thing about what they like, have they done things that you have done, places you've been on holiday and people you know, just don't lie because one lie normally leads to many more lies to cover up the first one. just be honest because people will be laughing at you behind your back

This has become a habit with you. Why say anything at all if you feel you have to be dishonest or tell a lie.
My husband used to do this and still does a little. He was caught so many times and embarrased and humiliated that he worked on the change.
No one can do this for you.
You have made the first move by admitting you have the problem, so now, work on it.

It's possible that it stems from insecurity. Perhaps you feel you need to impress people due to feeings of inferiority or inadequacy. You may have gotten into a habit and do it without realizing. Try and reprogramme your brain by catching yourself everytime you lie and just stop speaking for a moment. If you do this you're subconcience will learn to filter what you say. A psychohypnotherapist could teach you methods in NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming.

you are not a bad person! people lie because they are afraid of the consequences of telling the truth. This is learnt in childhood when you are confronted with an angry parent or there is aggression/violence in the home/school/family. it is about self preservation. How was being a child for you do you recognise what i mean. you can change by taking a chance and telling the truth and see how that feels.

Know how you feel... it's a toughy, it's hard but all you can do is realise that what's coming out of your mouth is a lie, stop yourself before it comes out... in the end it comes down to you, perhaps you find it easier to lie because you're a little underconfident in yourself? I really do know how you feel but no-one but you can help with this, probably not what you want to hear but... anyhow, it'll save you trouble and stop you losing friends if you can find some way to stop... its up to you, whats more important?

Because you have formed a habit to lie, the lie automatically come out of your mouth. Henceforth before speaking to some one, just try remember the phrase "weigh before you speak". At that time before replying or saying something you must decide not to lie and your effort for some days may change your habit of lying.

Best of luck!

I think those lies that you make up when you are bored and have nothing to talk about are the kind of lies that people see through. I'm sure they know you've just made them up. If it really bothers you or you think they believed it then make up some really impossible stories. Stories that you know nobody would believe. That way you not only entertaining them with your weird story but you can be reassured that you haven't lied to them.

come and be a conservative. we will shape you up. but really, this isnt your fault unless you have some wierd lieing disease... its ur parents fault for not punishing you when it happened. that doesnt mean that you dont need to work to stop lieing. the best way to do this, like most things, is the hard way. you need to lie to someone you love and have them not trust you anymore. once you know how that feels, if you are smart you wont do it again. but DONT do it on purpose. eventually, it will happen and you will stop. this is what parents are for and im sorry you arent as fourtunate as me.
