I used to have the same problem before I started purchasing the spring mix greens ,in the 16 oz (1 lb ) plastic containers, that are pre-washed,they last much longer then a head of lettuce and taste good on sandwiches also.Fresh Attitude is one brand and Organic Earthbound Farm is another.

I think it's all in the preparation. I learned this in home ec, back in the 1950s, not that that really matters. This would be for iceberg lettuce. Remove the other layers of leaves, the ones that are kind of floppy. Grab the head of lettuce and whack the core on the corner of the sink or the countertop. Remove the core. Put the cored lettuce under cold running water to rinse it well. Turn the lettuce core side down to drain out excess water. Wrap it in a tea towel/kitchen towel, paper towel to drain the lettuce. When you think the lettuce is well drained, dry it off a little more and put it in a plastic storage bag core side down and refrigerate. I usually do this when I bring the lettuce home from the store if I have time otherwise just do it before you use it the first time and store the rest in a plastic storage bag with the cut or core side down. Good luck.

If you're using iceberg lettuce, try tearing it with your hands. If you use a knife, the metals from the knife will make it brown.
If you're using romaine (which is better than iceberg), when you get home from the supermarket, take it out of the bag, wrap it with paper towels and put in a large ziploc bag. When you are going to use it, just tear the whole leafs that you are going to use.
