A light breakfast that usually consists of a breadstuff (such as toast, croissants, pastries, etc.) and coffee, tea or other liquid. The continental breakfast is the antithesis of the hearty english breakfast.

After WWII, it referred to the Paris style breakfast of expresso and french bread with butter and jam commonly available at small hotels, often for free, and from street cafes. This has gradually expanded until one definition I found stated quite openly that it was any breakfast a facility wanted to call a continental breakfast, but it never includes an animal protein source such as eggs and meat. It is, or at least was, provided with a minimum of service. In small hotels it was simply put out in the common area and you helped yourself. In cafes it was 'served' as the owner was opening up, and doing other things to get ready for the day.

When speaks of a "continental" breakfast, one is typically speaking of a breakfast a la francaise, as France is the largest country in Western Europe and hence the word "continental" denote something done as in France.
Thus a continental breakfast typically has coffee, cocoa, croissants, bread rolls and butter, as French eat less for breakfast and abhor tea and bacon, which are the essence of an "English" breakfast.

A continental breakfast at this one motel I stayed at consisted of coffee and Little Debbie snack cakes. And what they put out there Monday, had to last you until Wednesday. Wowzers.

Hotels like to use this to make you think you're getting some great free meal! LOL.

Typically, you choose from a buffet of pastry, orange juice and coffee. Some places let you use a toaster and make your own bagels. Don't look for eggs, bacon, or pancakes- not included...
